Both teams to score (BTTS) explained

Most football bets ride on who wins. Both teams to score β often shown as BTTS, or GG/NG (goal/no goal) β ignores the result entirely and settles on one question: did each side put the ball in the net? It's one of the most popular markets in football, so here's exactly how it works and the honest maths behind it.
Yes or No β and what counts
BTTS is a simple two-way market:
- Yes β wins if both teams score at least one goal (final score 1-1, 2-1, 3-2, and so on).
- No β wins if either team fails to score, including a 0-0, a 1-0, a 3-0 β any result with a clean sheet on one side.
The winner of the match is irrelevant. A 4-0 thrashing and a goalless draw both settle BTTS as No; a 1-1 and a wild 3-2 both settle as Yes. Own goals count as goals for the team credited with them.
Worked example
$10 on BTTS Yes at 1.80:
- Final score 2-1: both scored β $10 Γ 1.80 = $18.00 returned.
- Final score 3-0: only one team scored β you lose your $10.
- Final score 0-0: neither scored β you lose your $10.
Note there's no "void" here β unlike draw no bet, a draw doesn't refund. Only the goals matter.
The common variants
| Market | Wins when |
|---|---|
| BTTS β Yes / No | Both teams score (Yes) vs a clean sheet either side (No), full match. |
| BTTS in 1st / 2nd half | Both teams must score within that single half. |
| BTTS & Win / Result | Combines both scoring and a specific result β shorter than either alone but harder to land. |
| Both teams to score 2+ | Each team must score at least two β a much rarer outcome, longer odds. |
The "& Win" and "2+" versions are effectively small bet builders: bundling extra conditions lengthens the price but stacks the margin and lowers your chance of winning.
Almost always 90 minutes
One rule catches people out: BTTS nearly always settles on normal time β 90 minutes plus stoppage. In a cup tie that goes to extra time or penalties, those goals usually don't count toward BTTS. If a game is 0-0 at 90 minutes and finishes 2-1 in extra time, BTTS still settles as No. Always check the market's rules before you bet.
The honest part
BTTS feels approachable because you don't have to pick a winner β but that doesn't make it easier to beat. The Yes and No prices already reflect how open or defensive the fixture looks, with the bookmaker's margin baked into both sides. There's no shortcut: an edge only exists if your own read on how many goals a match will produce beats the implied probability in the odds β the same value-betting maths as any other market.
