Cashback bonuses explained โ how much are they really worth?

Cashback is one of the few casino promotions that can genuinely favour the player โ but only in one of its two forms. It pays back a slice of your losses, which sounds simple, until you notice that one version is real withdrawable money and the other is just another bonus in disguise. Knowing which is which is the whole game.
What cashback actually is
Cashback returns a fixed percentage of your net losses over a defined window โ a single deposit, a day, or a week. If you're down $200 net and the offer is 10% weekly cashback, you get $20 back. Unlike a deposit match, it costs you nothing up front and only triggers when you lose.
The one distinction that decides its value
| Type | What you get | Wagering | Real value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash cashback | Withdrawable real money | None or very low | โ 100% of face value |
| Bonus cashback | Bonus funds credited to your account | Yes โ often 1รโ10ร | Much lower (like any bonus after playthrough) |
The exact same "10% cashback" headline can be worth a full $20 or barely half that, depending on this single line in the terms. Always find it before you judge the offer.
A worked example
Say you deposit and end a week $300 down, with a 15% cashback offer:
- Cash cashback: 15% ร $300 = $45 real money, withdrawable. Your net loss becomes $255.
- Bonus cashback with 5ร wagering: you receive $45 in bonus funds, but must wager $225 to unlock any winnings. After the house edge on that playthrough, the expected take-home is typically only a fraction of the $45 โ the same maths behind every wagering requirement.
You can put real numbers on the bonus version with our Bonus Value Calculator โ enter the cashback as the bonus amount and its wagering terms to see the score.
Cashback vs a deposit match
A deposit match has a bigger headline (100%, 200%โฆ) but its value is gutted by wagering. Cashback is smaller but, in its cash form, keeps almost all of its value and only pays when you're losing โ which is exactly when you'd want it. For a losing session, honest cash cashback often beats a flashy match. Judge them the same way: by what you actually keep, the principle behind our Bonus Value Score.
Terms that quietly shrink it
- Caps. "10% cashback up to $50" stops mattering once your losses pass $500.
- Minimum loss thresholds before any cashback triggers.
- Short claim windows โ bonus cashback often expires within days.
- Game exclusions โ losses on some games may not count.
- Net vs gross โ cashback is on net losses (losses minus wins), not every losing spin.
