No-deposit bonuses explained — are they actually free?

A no-deposit bonus is the most tempting offer in online gambling: free money (or free spins) just for signing up, no deposit needed. It's real — but "free" hides a stack of conditions that usually shrink it to very little. Here's exactly how they work and when one is worth claiming.
What a no-deposit bonus is
It's a small reward a casino gives new customers without asking for a deposit — typically a few units of bonus cash (say $5–$20) or a handful of free spins on a specific slot. You can play and potentially win real money, which is why casinos use them to get you through the door. It's different from a deposit-match bonus, where the casino multiplies money you put in.
The three things that shrink it
- Wagering requirement. Winnings from the bonus must be wagered a set number of times — and no-deposit offers often carry higher multipliers than deposit bonuses. A $10 no-deposit bonus at x50 means betting $500 before you can withdraw anything.
- Maximum cashout. Almost every no-deposit bonus caps what you can withdraw from the winnings — often a small fixed amount like $50 or $100, no matter how much you technically win. This is the single biggest limit on their value; see max cashout explained.
- Game & bet restrictions. Usually only certain slots count (at full contribution), with a low maximum bet per spin while the bonus is active — break it and the winnings can be voided.
You still have to verify your identity
Even though you never deposited, you can't withdraw no-deposit winnings until you pass the casino's ID and address checks (KYC). Licensed casinos are legally required to do this. It's the step where "free money" meets reality — and where a fake or unlicensed site would simply keep your winnings, which is why you should check the licence before claiming anything.
So are they worth claiming?
Honestly: as a free, no-risk look at a casino, yes — you're risking nothing of your own. As a way to make money, no. Between high wagering, a low max cashout and game limits, the realistic value of a typical no-deposit bonus is small. Judge one by the same four questions as any bonus — wagering multiple, what games count, the max cashout, and the expiry window — exactly what our Bonus Value Score does automatically. And always confirm the casino is licensed in your country first; a generous no-deposit offer is a classic hook on scam casinos.
