A progressive betting system changes the size of your next stake based on whether your last bet won or lost, rather than betting the same amount every time. Martingale, Fibonacci and D'Alembert are the three most common versions, and they differ sharply in how aggressively they escalate — but every one of them is solving the wrong problem: they change how a losing streak feels and how a bankroll gets spent, not the probability of winning any individual bet.

Martingale: double the stake after every loss

Martingale doubles your bet after each loss and resets to the starting stake after a win, so a single win at any point recovers every prior loss in the streak plus the original stake profit. The problem is the growth rate: after 10 consecutive losses starting from a $10 unit, the next required bet is $10,240, and the total already lost sits at $10,230 — a losing streak that's entirely plausible on a near-50/50 market gets financially or practically impossible to continue long before it resolves, hitting either a bettor's bankroll or the sportsbook's max bet limit.

Fibonacci and D'Alembert: gentler escalation, same underlying problem

Fibonacci increases the next stake by adding the two previous stakes together after a loss, and steps back two positions in the sequence after a win — reaching only about 89 units after 10 straight losses instead of Martingale's 1,024, a much softer curve. D'Alembert is gentler still: add one flat unit after a loss, subtract one after a win, growing linearly instead of exponentially, which keeps total losses after a bad streak far smaller — around $550 instead of Martingale's $10,230 on the same 10-loss run. Both feel safer than Martingale because the numbers stay in reach of an ordinary bankroll, but neither one addresses the actual math underneath the bets.

Why changing stake size can't turn a losing bet into a winning one

Every version of this idea runs into the same mathematical wall: if a single wager has negative expected value, no sequence of stake changes based on past results can convert it into a positive-expectation bet, because each outcome is independent of the ones before it — a loss doesn't make the next bet more likely to win, and a progression only redistributes when the losses and wins land, not whether they do. Betting more after a loss means risking more money precisely when a losing streak is already underway, which increases the chance of hitting a bankroll limit or a sportsbook's maximum bet cap before the system has a chance to recover.

What these systems are actually good for, and what they aren't

A progressive system can smooth out the emotional experience of a session — a string of small, gradual wins feels different from flat betting, even when the underlying probability of winning any given bet hasn't changed at all. What it cannot do is turn a bet priced against you into one priced in your favor; the only way to shift real expected value is to find a genuinely mispriced line, which is a question of finding value in the odds themselves, not how much you stake on them.
